Constraints
Only have 5 days to create a functional app.
Has to be designed for mobile devices.
I have to focus on improving the In-Person experience.
Roles
I worked on this app single-handily from start to finish and took on many roles:
Researcher
User Interface Designer
Usability Administrator
Duration
October 2, 2023 - October 6, 2023 (5 days)
When visiting museums & galleries, many users go around observing all the artworks they see but most of them don’t learn about their histories.
Improve the experience of viewing art in-person when in museums or galleries.
Ensure users don’t become overwhelmed with the history behind every artwork.
The focus was to understand what were the experiences users had when they visited museums & formulate a strategy on how we could improve upon them.
From the brief I was given, it provided me with several research materials that would help me expedite this time-constraint project. It provided me with several quotes, a persona, & a video interview that discussed about the experiences users had when they visited museums.
Details about the artwork
Quote 1:
“Sometimes I’ll do a quick Google Search for a painting while on my phone while at the museum... but I usually just find long articles that are super overwhelming”
Insight 1:
Would just like to find quick & short info on certain artworks & not be overwhelmed by long articles that focus on it.
Quote 2:
“I enjoy looking at art, but sometimes I feel like I’m missing out on the full experience by not knowing any background information or context”
Insight 2:
Needs to be informed on background info & context when looking at the art.
Quote 3:
“I don’t really enjoy group tours because I like to do my own thing... but sometimes I listen in to learn a few facts about the artist, or the piece itself.”
Insight 3:
Would like to know a few key facts about the artist or artwork.
The overall design of the artwork
Quote 4:
“I may do a little research before my visit, but I always find a work of art that catches my eye that I didn’t read about beforehand.”
Insight 4:
Would like to be able to identify a artwork & learn more about with a simple mobile scan/photo.
Quote 5:
“I often wonder - what would the artist tell me about this piece if they had a minute to talk to me? How cool would that be?!?”
Insight 5:
Incorporate the intentions & inspirations that went behind the artist artwork.
Information about the artist
Quote 6:
“I like to form my own opinion about art, but it can be hard to do that when I don’t really know anything about the artist, or what their intentions were in creating the work.”
Insight 6:
Would like to know more about artist & what their intentions were behind the artwork.
Quote 7:
“There are so many times I find myself saying ‘how did the artist do that?! - I would love to know more about their process & technique.”
Insight 7:
Would like to know to the artist process or technique in creating the artwork.
From the video interview I was given, I was able to take down insightful notes from an art museum curator who discussed about their experience with providing a well-informed tour to visitors. Listed below are some of the highlights:
Most visitors would like to know about the history of the artists like “where they came from”, “What’s a fun fact about them”, etc.
Ensure the visitors understood the intentions & story behind the artist’s work.
Many visitors like to know what motivated an artist to become an artist or what motivated them to create some of their famous works.
With a limited amount of time while giving a tour, the curator informs the visitors about the techniques, colors, mediums, composition, & context that went behind each artwork.
After having a good understanding on a user’s experience when it came to visiting museums. My next step was to map out some ideas on how I could better improve their in-person visits.
With the short amount of time I had, I knew I would not be able to plan out multiple user flows so I prioritized the main issues I saw that users had & tried to plan out a strategy with how I could resolve those issues.
Users learning about an Artwork
Users searching for an Artwork
From my user flows, I proceeded on to sketched out multiple variations of the main pages I was planning to design.
Upon mapping & sketching out my ideas of how the app should work. I proceeded on to design phase where I created the actual wireframes to my app.
Next, I conducted my usability testing for my wireframes to see if they provided a seamless & easy to understand experience for users.
Design Changes
From my usability testing, I made modifications to my designs based on the feedback I received from users
Overall, the Wealth App seems to have successful in providing an easy process for creating & tracking budgets/financial goals.
Key Takeaways
Users were able to easily navigate from the Search Pages to Artwork Details Page.
Users liked the feature where they could scan the artworks & the app will redirect them to the details page.
Users felt the amount of information & hierarchy on the Artwork Details page was easy to read through.
Key Takeaways
Due to the short amount of time I was allowed to work on this project. I was not able to thoroughly plan out & execute all of the ideas I envisioned. So listed below would be some of the ways I would go about to improve upon my GalleryPal project.
Map out & create the pages for the museum search, onboarding, save, & profile journeys.
Incorporate some animations throughout the prototype & test them out.
Perhaps change or expand upon the red color scheme throughout the app.
Conduct further research into users experience when visiting art museums & investigate competitor apps that have a similar concept like this.
